How to treat crooked teeth
The term “crooked teeth” refers to a condition characterized by misaligned teeth, which can happen due to small jaws, tooth decay, gingivitis, etc. Those who are unfortunately affected by this condition not only lose confidence in communication, but are also at risk of several dental issues. Hence, many of them have been actively seeking a reliable method of treating crooked teeth
Learn the basics of crooked teeth
What causes crooked teeth?
As a baby starts losing his/her milk teeth, permanent teeth will erupt to replace them. In some cases, this replacement process happens too quickly – that is, the permanent teeth erupted when the milk teeth have not yet fallen. As a result, the permanent teeth lack space for development, which forces them to deviate from the normal position.
Crooked teeth can have a serious impact on our confidence in communication. In addition, the condition may also affect your chewing function, as well as make it more difficult to retain oral hygiene.
What are the effects of crooked teeth?
For some people, having crooked teeth is only an aesthetic defect. However, if not treated promptly, the condition may give rise to more serious harm:
- Incorrect bite joints, which in turn affects the ability to eat and chew.
- Difficulty in pronunciation and communication.
- An unnatural, misaligned smile.
- Risk of dental diseases such as tooth decay, gingivitis, periodontitis, bad breath, etc.
How to treat crooked teeth
With recent developments in the healthcare industry, various methods are available for patients to effectively treat crooked teeth. Each of them has its own pros and cons.
1. Orthodontic surgery
Orthodontic surgery is a medical procedure that aims to treat seriously distorted teeth. To perform the surgery, the orthodontist will remove a piece of bone and the misaligned tooth before returning it to the proper position and fixing it with braces.
Orthodontic surgery is a complex procedure that needs to be conducted by highly qualified doctors. Therefore, you should only choose reputable and quality dental clinics to undergo this treatment.
Getting braces is the most common method of treating crooked teeth these days. This treatment is well-known for being easy to conduct, less invasive than the above-mentioned surgical approach, and very affordable too.
To install braces, the doctor will use orthodontic tools and metal wires to reposition misaligned teeth. Usually, it takes about 12-24 months for braces to achieve their effects; in more serious cases, the whole treatment may take up to 36 months.
The use of braces is generally quite effective and does not cause much harm to the tissue and jawbone. However, many people are concerned about its lengthy treatment duration. In addition, this method only changes the tooth’s position without adjusting its size. Hence, for those with large, long and rough incisors, getting braces is not the best option for them.
With developments in the medical industry, patients now have the option of using transparent aligners (Invisalign) instead of traditional metal braces. Although the cost is higher, the use of Invisalign is superior to braces in terms of aesthetics.

3. Porcelain crowns
Aside from braces, porcelain crowns can also be used to treat distorted and crooked teeth. To do this, the dentist will grind off a portion of the distorted tooth’s exterior. After that, he/she will snap over the tooth with a crown to improve its outlook.
Compared to braces, the use of porcelain crowns is usually less expensive and does not require tooth extraction. In addition, the whole procedure is very quick and only takes about 7-10 days. Porcelain crowns are designed to match the color of other teeth; hence, you do not need to worry too much about unevenly colored teeth. Not to mention, they are very durable and generally last about 10-15 years or more. However, the use of crowns involves grinding your teeth, which may damage the pulp and reduce the lifespan of the real tooth.
