Invisalign vs Braces: Why the Former is Better

Crooked teeth remain one of the most common barriers to effective communication. Not only do they seriously affect your outer appearance, but they also give rise to health complications such as tooth decay, periodontal disease, and speech issues. Orthodontics, which aims to correct your teeth and jaw’s position and shape, provides the perfect solution to this dilemma.

Previously, orthodontic treatment involves the use of braces to align and straighten your teeth. Despite its effectiveness, this method still presents some drawbacks, especially when it comes to aesthetics. Recently, Invisalign has emerged as a nice alternative to conventional braces

Know the basics

Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontics is a branch of cosmetic dentistry that focuses on changing the position of misaligned teeth and jaws. By having their teeth and jawbone re-positioned, patients may expect an improvement in both their appearance and oral health. Aside from aesthetic purposes, orthodontics also aims to resolve dental issues such as overbite, underbite, and crowding.

Below are some main reasons why you may consider getting orthodontic treatment:

  • Aesthetics: Adjustments of your teeth’s shape allow for a better smile, which means more confidence and opportunities in life.
  • Digestion: Those with crooked teeth often have difficulty in properly chewing food, which requires the stomach to work harder. Orthodontic treatment helps improve the chewing function, hence making it easier for the body to absorb nutrients.
  • Health: Straightened teeth are easier to take care of, which allows for better oral hygiene and prevention of complications such as tooth decay.

Generally, orthodontic treatment involves the use of certain devices, which are either fixed or removable. The equipment being used will determine the type of treatment. By far, the two most popular orthodontic treatments are Braces and Invisalign.

Invisalign vs Braces

The conventional orthodontic treatment utilizes braces, which consist of metal wires/ brackets anchored to your teeth. By constantly applying pressure on them, braces gradually move the crooked teeth into the correct position. As the teeth move into their new position, the jaw will develop new bone tissues to support them.

With recent advances in dentistry, patients now have a new orthodontic treatment – Invisalign. Sometimes referred to as “invisible” braces, Invisalign involves the use of transparent plastic/ acrylic aligners to reposition your teeth for an ideal smile. As the aligners are removable, patients are able to take them out on specific occasions. These aligners are changed every two weeks until your teeth have relocated to their new position. The whole treatment duration varies depending on each person’s case.

Compared to traditional braces, Invisalign provides pretty much the same effectiveness. Both are capable of treating conditions such as biting issues, overcrowding, and aesthetic deficiency. Yet, many patients and orthodontists prefer Invisalign, as the method comes with various benefits.

5 Reasons why Invisalign is the preferable option

Invisalign vs Braces: Why Invisalign is Better?

1. A more beautiful outlook

The most notable advantage of Invisalign is “invisibility”. As the aligner is so transparent, few people will be able to notice them, so your orthodontic treatment plan will be kept in secret. If you are sensitive to people’s comments, Insivalign is obviously the superior choice.

One more benefit of the aligners’ transparency is that they provide a method to hide part of your teeth’s flaws. Therefore, you may enjoy a more beautiful smile right after the treatment.

2. Easier eating and oral hygiene

Invisalign aligners are removable, so you can take them out while eating, brushing/flossing your teeth. As a result, nothing will interfere with your previous eating/ cleaning style. This is not the case with braces – once the operation is complete, they are permanently fixed to your teeth for the whole treatment duration.

Wearing braces imposes a restriction on the number of foods you can eat. For example, chewy foods like gum, popcorn, and candies are a definite no-no. As Invisalign aligners can be taken out while you eat, such limitation on your diet is unnecessary. In addition, when wearing braces, food may be stuck between the metal wires/ brackets, which proves to be a hassle in most situations.

However, remember that Invisalign aligners only work if they are in your mouth. Hence, you should wear these trays for 20-22 hours per day to maximize the success rate.

3. Better comfort for patients

Conventional braces require the attachment of metal wires to the teeth’s exterior. Such wires/ brackets may cause you to feel painful/ irritating, especially upon your teeth’s contact with foods and brushes. Invisalign helps resolve this issue due to its lack of metal frames, which avoids causing irritation to the mouth and gums. Therefore, patients can comfortably eat, work and enjoy their life as usual.

4. Optimized treatment results

With Invisalign, patients are able to observe the expected outcome in 3D pictures before the treatment even begins. As the creation of Invisalign aligners is customized based on each patient’s condition, the treatment result is generally optimized better.

In the case of Invisalign, the alignment of your teeth commences right after treatment. With each aligner replacement, the effectiveness will be gradually enhanced in accordance with the 3D visual treatment plan. After 3-4 changes, you should be able to see obvious improvements in your teeth’s position and shape.

5. Reduced treatment duration

Generally, braces must be worn for 2-3 years in order to achieve the desired result. As a result, patients will have to experience the convenience of wearing these metal wires for much longer. For Invisalign, the average treatment duration is only 6-18 months, which means 1-2 fewer years of discomfort, diet restriction, and follow-up visits.

Unlike braces, Invisalign visits do not involve the adjustment of brackets – instead, the trip will be focused on the treatment plan and results. Hence, your appointments with the dentist will become much more enjoyable.

Side notes before your Invisalign treatment

Everything comes at a price, and orthodontics is not an exception. Despite its superiority in terms of aesthetics, comfort, and effectiveness, Invisalign does have a few cons that you need to take into consideration.

  • Cost: Higher quality means higher costs. Invisalign is generally more expensive than conventional braces. While the average costs of braces range from $2000-5000, Invisalign normally costs about $4500-5500, which makes them more appealing to those on a budget. If you can afford the expenses, Invisalign is obviously the better choice.
  • Caring requirements: As Invisalign aligners are removable, patients are required to pay proper attention to them. Otherwise, you may run into situations such as accidentally throwing them away in a napkin/ dropping them from your pockets. On the other hand, if you’re eating or drinking anything other than water (e.g: soft drinks), you need to remove your aligners to protect them from damage and discoloration.
  • Complexity: Invisalign requires certain skills from the orthodontist to be performed appropriately. Hence, you need to be selective in your choice of dentists.

Where can I get Invisalign treatment?

A beautiful smile is the dream of many people – that’s why many people have resorted to orthodontic treatments. Compared to conventional braces, Invisalign is more expensive, but the trade-off is definitely worth considering. As long as you have the necessary time and budget, getting Invisalign treatment should bring about great changes to your life.
