A Quick Look at Medical Tourism in Vietnam

Medical tourism in Vietnam has been growing considerably in recent years. With the availability of traditional medicine, healing vacations, high-quality procedures, JCI accredited hospitals, etc, expats have a lot to anticipate. Let’s discover what patients can expect from a medical trip to Vietnam.

Located on the eastern part of the Indochina peninsula, Vietnam is bordered by the East Sea to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the southeast, China to the north, and Laos and Cambodia to the west. The country is known for its various wonders, including Ha Long Bay, Hue Imperial City, Hoi An Town, Sa Pa, etc. Since the 1990s, there have been major, continuous developments in Vietnam’s infrastructure, which makes it an even more ideal destination for tourists.

Recently, Vietnam has emerged as a popular hub for healthcare services. According to Vietnamnet, in 2017, Vietnam attracted around 80,000 foreign tourists, who spent $2 billion for health check-up and treatment in total. Ho Chi Minh City alone welcomed almost 40,000 medical tourists.  Every year, the Vietnamese medical sector’s growth is about 18-20 percent.

Why choose Vietnam as a Medical Tourism Destination?

There are several reasons for the popularity of Vietnam as a medical travel destination.

1. Accessible geographic location

The country’s geographic location makes it accessible for people from all over the world, especially those in neighboring countries such as Australia. According to Tran Quoc Bao, Planning & Marketing Director of City International Hospital, HCM City: “Vietnam is located in the center of Southeast Asia, which makes it convenient to reach from Southeast Asian countries. Plus, Vietnam has the advantage of political stability. This makes Vietnam a safe and secure traveling destination for foreign tourists.”

2. High-quality, yet affordable medical treatment

Cosmetic and dental procedures in Vietnam

Vietnam is an ideal country for dental care. Compared with that in developed countries, the cost of dental-related procedures in Vietnam is 50% lower; yet the service quality, doctor skills, and technical equipment are not to be looked down on.

Also, according to VnExpress, the 2017 Beauty Price Index released by Latin American e-commerce platform Linio has recognized Vietnam as the world’s most affordable place for cosmetic surgery. The availability of services such as less-than-a-thousand-dollar nose job and US$2,000 breast augmentation makes Vietnam one of the most economical destinations for beauty care.

3. JCI accredited hospitals

JCI, which stands for Joint Commission International, is one of the most prestigious healthcare accreditation in the world. The accreditation has 8 sets of standard relating to patient care and 6 sets relating to hospital management. It is proof of hospitals that offers the best treatment and safety for patients.

4. Traditional medicine

As a neighboring country of China, Vietnam has an extensive history of traditional medicine. Foreign travelers who visit Vietnam can choose to experience healthcare services based on the basis of Oriental medicine, with acupuncture as the main component.

Currently, Vietnam has established major acupuncture centers such as Central Acupuncture Hospital, Central Traditional Medicine Hospital (all in Hanoi), Institute of Medicine and Ethnic Group of Ho Chi Minh City, etc.

5. Various tourist attractions

Delicious cuisine, beautiful beaches, exotic culture, etc. are just some of the various appealing things that Vietnam can offer. As a fast-growing expat destination and business hub, the country is also well-known as a top destination for travellers from all over the world.

With over 3,000 km of coastline, Vietnam has developed various resorts in the coastal areas. Some of these, such as Do Son (Hai Phong), Sam Son (Thanh Hoa), Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa), Vung Tau (Ba Ria-Vung Tau) have been available since the beginning of the 11th century.

From the late 19th to the early 20th century, the French have invested in the building of many resorts and medical facilities, including the resorts in the mountainous areas such as Tam Dao, Sa Pa Northern, Bach Ma, Ba Na (Central), Dalat (South), etc.
