What is the JCI and JCI Accreditation?
Joint Commission International (JCI) is one of the world-leading nonprofit organizations working for patient safety. Founded in 1994 by the Joint Commission Organization, the JCI has been making great efforts to identify, measure, and share best practices in quality and patient safety with the world. The JCI Accreditation focuses on eight types of health care programs. They include: hospitals, academic medical center hospitals, ambulatory care facilities, clinical laboratories, home care facilities, long term care facilities, medical transport organizations, and primary care centers.
In addition to its primary accreditation responsibility, JCI also helps deliver education and evidence-based advisory services. Above all, the JCI is a nonprofit organization. It essentially means the organization directs most, if not all, of its revenue toward improving its performance as a health care accreditor.
What makes the JCI Accreditation reliable?
The JCI has previously received acknowledgment and, most importantly, accreditation from the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua). This recognition essentially indicates that the JCI has had several sets of standards acknowledged, approved, and endorsed by the ISQua themselves.
In addition to its ISQua accreditation, the JCI has also been the standard bearer of the internationally recognized Gold Seal of Approval.
Other features of the JCI include:
• A unique tracer methodology that acts as the cornerstone of the organization’s on-site survey and evaluation.
• A network accreditation system that enables other organizations to acquire the JCI accreditation via network application.
• A diverse international team that helps the JCI adapts to the different health care practices around the world while maintaining the organization’s international standards.
• The organization’s Standards Advisory Panel whose primary aim is to guide the development and revision process of the JCI accreditation standards. Generally, the panel itself consists of experienced physicians, nurses, administrators, and public-policy experts.
• The organization’s regional advisory councils, which help the JCI evaluate and improve the health care quality of different regions around the world. Currently, the JCI has 3 regional advisory councils, which are that of Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the Middle East and North Africa.
Achieving the JCI accreditation
In order to be recognized and accredited, medical institutes will have to follow the 10 steps as listed by the JCI themselves:
1. Familiarize with the JCI standards and survey process
The first step of the process takes approximately 2 – 3 months. Within this time, the medical institute is expected to:
- Familiarize themselves with the JCI policies and procedures
- Review the JCI hospital accreditation manual and survey process guide
- Learn the benefits of the JCI accreditation
- Inform the hospital team members of the JCI accreditation pathway
2. Conduct gap analysis and build action plan
The second step of the process takes approximately 2 – 3 months. Within this time, they expect the medical institute to:
- Compare the current standards of their hospital with the JCI standards
- Form an accreditation plan
- List the tasks that need to be completed and have them assigned to suitable staffs
- Select a primary accreditation who will be in charge of the hospital’s contact with the JCI via electronic application
3. Update policies and procedures
The third step of the process takes approximately 2 months. Within this time, they expect the medical institute to:
- Thoroughly assess their current hospital policies and procedures
- Develop new policies and/or procedures that meet the JCI standards
4. Target improvements when needed
The fourth step of the process takes approximately 2 – 3 months. Within this time, they expect the medical institute is to:
- Identify any current challenge(s) that they may have
- Thoroughly perform a risk assessment for their hospital as a whole
- Work to resolve the challenges
5. Work with staff to overcome obstacles
The fifth step of the process takes approximately 2 – 3 months. Within this time, they expect the medical institute to:
- Know how to achieve a safety culture
- Provide their staffs with adequate training, especially if the institute has recently included any new procedure
- Involve physician leaders in the process
6. Assess readiness at midpoint
The sixth step of the process takes approximately 2 – 3 months. Within this time, they expect the medical institute to:
- Form a preparation plan for the mock survey
- Conduct patient tracers
- Involve their staffs in the entire process
7. Continue training for sustainable changes
The seventh step of the process takes approximately 2 – 3 months. Within this time, they expect the medical institute to:
- Continually educate and motivate their staffs about the procedures
- Complete the preparations for the mock survey
8. Evaluate and refine processes
The eighth step of the process takes approximately 2 – 3 months, according to the JCI. Within this time, theyexpect the medical institute to:
- Detect any remaining deficiency with the help of their accreditation team
- Encourage their staffs to make the necessary corrections
- Maintain a cohesive and efficient spirit among the staffs
9. The mock survey
The ninth step of the process takes approximately 2 – 3 months, according to the JCI. Within this time, they expect the medical institute to:
- Conduct the mock survey
- Identify any shortcoming and how to improve them
- Form a plan to resolve the problems
10. Make final modifications as needed
The tenth step of the process takes approximately 6 – 7 months, according to the JCI. Within this time, they expect the medical institute to:
- Make final preparations for their actual upcoming survey
- Proceed with the JCI survey, which include an opening conference, leadership interviews, assessments of staff qualification and education, a facility tour, and a leadership conference
